The Cardex module is a database that allows you to access up
to 12,000 index cards. Just use the flexible search feature to
bring up the card you want. Right Hand Man will even let you
dial the phone number directly from the Cardex entry. You also
have the option to create password-protected encrypted Cardexes
guard your data.
Right Hand Man is shipped with two default Cardex files:
AREA is a list of area codes for the United States.
Each entry includes the Area Code, State, Timezone, and a
list of Cities with the corresponding area code.
DEX has the default format (template) for a typical
telephone index (Name, Phone, Address).
File: The file commands submenu offers options to
create/maintain the list of Cardex files and the
records they contain:
New: Creates a new Cardex. Simply select the command
and give the newly created Cardex a name of up to
eight characters in length. See Creating a Cardex
File.
Open: Lets you read/edit a Cardex file. Same as
pressing <Enter> on any highlighted Cardex in the
list. The highlighted Cardex is the default.
Select the desired Cardex, then press <Enter>.
Note: You will be prompted for a password if you
are opening a guarded cardex.
Delete: Deletes an entire Cardex file. When you go to
delete a Cardex, RHM will remind you that doing so
will destroy all the cards it contains. RHM asks
for confirmation.
Rename: Changes the name of a Cardex file.
Template: Allows you to create a new format for cards in a
Cardex. In a phone index, for example, you would
want names and phone numbers; but in another, you
might have inventory items listed with their
reorder numbers.
The Template command lets you modify an index card
format to suit its information needs.
Exit: Exits the Cardex module, bringing you back to the
main program opening screen.
Edit: The Resident Editor option is available when you are
creating/editing a Cardex template and adding/editing
an index entry. See the Resident Editor section of
Main Menu Help.
Record: Once you've opened a Cardex file, the Record menu
allows you to maintain individual records (cards)
within the selected index:
Search: Lets you search through a Cardex file for a
particular text string, allowing you quick and
easy access to the information you need. This
feature also permits Wild-Card Searches.
Append: Adds new cards to an existing Cardex file. Enter
the information according to the template you've
created, pressing <Enter> after each line. Same
as pressing the <Ins> key once you've opened a
Cardex file. Press <Esc> to save the card to
disk.
Change: Use this command to make changes to the displayed
card. <Ctrl-X> will abort any changes you made.
Delete: Deletes the displayed card from a Cardex file.
Simply go to the card in question and select the
command. RHM asks you to confirm the deletion.
Same as pressing the <Del> key.
Export: Exports the displayed card to any location export
buffer. Go to the desired destination, then use
<Ctrl-E> to retrieve the data.
Print: Prints out the displayed card as it appears on the
screen.
Call: If your computer has a modem, the Call command will
dial phone numbers for you directly from a Cardex card.
Select Call when the card you wish to dial from is
displayed. RHM highlights the number in the template.
If the phone number you wish to dial is located on that
line, press <Enter>. If the number is on another line,
position the cursor in front of the number you want to
dial, then press <Enter>. You will hear RHM dial the
phone number for you. Pick up the receiver and take it
from there.
Password: This command allows you to change the password on an
encrypted Cardex file.
Using the Cardex:
While editing individual index cards, Cursor, Ctrl, and
Alt keys function as they do with Right Hand Man's Resident
Editor. Once you access (Open) a Cardex file, move forward
through the cards by pressing <PgDn>; to move back, press
<PgUp>. <Home> jumps to the first card and <End> jumps to
the last card from anywhere in the index.
Cardex Utilities:
The following utilities are used to CONVERT text files
to and from Cardexes, to PRINT out all or part of a Cardex
file, and to MERGE Cardex files.
